                                 Philip W. Lucas, MSW, LICSW, ACSW

                      Mr. Lucas has more than 25 years of direct practice and administrative experience in the areas of behavioral health and children's services.  He is a national trainer and consultant focusing on issues of organizational development, mental health, substance abuse, child welfare, disaster and trauma.

 

                                 Veronica Pace, MSW

                       Ms. E. Veronica Pace is the Director of the DC Office on Aging, appointed to this cabinet-level position twice by the HOnorable Marion S. Barry and Mayor Anthony Williams.Ms. Pace is the founder of the Senior Wellness movement in the District and directed the planning, development and construction of the first free-standing wellness center.  In addition, she has increased the budget and resources for DC elderly citizens.

 

                      b.     Social Worker of the Year

                                  Dianne Brown, DSW, LICSW, ACSW

                       Dr. Brown has worked tirelessly and given of her time to create innovative approaches for social workers in the District of Columbia.  She has over 30 years of public service and is a past president of DC Metro Chapter, NASW.

 

                      c.      Public Citizen of the Year

                                   Reverend Graylan Scott Hagler

                       Reverand Hagler is the spiritual leader for the Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ.  He has been a catalyst in developing, nurturing, advocating and sustaining partnerships with the community as shown by his belaboring battle with Exxon/Mobile over a stretch of land in the District that now serves as housing for the elderly.

1.        Ed Washington has had a distinguished and inspiring career of 42 years of social work practice.  Since 1986 he has been the Chief of the Substance Abuse Branch in Forensic Services at Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital.

b.       Social Worker of the Year

                                                               i.      Vanella A. Jackson-Crawford

1.        Vanella received this award for her incorporation of entrepreneurial initiatives into her work as social work consultant, speaker, coach and trainer.

2003

a.       Lifetime Achievement

                                                               i.      Ms. Esther B. Dickerson

1.      She is recognized for her outstanding skills as a clinician and as an administrator.  She was selected to develop and direct a Case Management program in the community.  She later returned to Saint Elizabeths Hospital to develop and implement a program that would address the Dixon Decree.  Driven by her leadership, the program was credited with the successful outplacement in excess of two hundred and fifty patients to the community. 

b.       Social Worker of the Year

                                                               i.       Mary Vincentia Joseph, DSW, LICSW, ACSW

1.        A  social worker extraordinaire as evidenced by her outstanding 28 year career as an educator, administrator, supervisor, clinician, researcher, advocate, publisher and a pioneer in advancing the use of ethical decision-making and the integration of religion and spirituality in social work practice and supervision.”

                                                              ii.      Lt. Beth A. Henson (Public Agency)  For her extraordinary leadership and courage at the World Trade Center after 9/11 as a member of a Disaster Mental Health Team.                                  

                      c.       Public Citizen of the Year: Margie S. Word  For her leadership, resourcefulness and advocacy on behalf of abandoned and neglected children in the District of Columbia by being the driving force in establishing Chi Child Center (Boarder Baby House) for abandoned children.

d.       Agency of the Year: Prince George’s County Social Service Dept.    (Karyn T. Lynch, Director)  For improving the quality of services to residents, strong commitment to improving customer services by creating a “Customer Service Unit“ , excellence in in-service training program and acceptance of social work interns.  The employees are commended for demonstrated excellence in providing social services.

                       These awards were presented to two non-social workers “who recognize the vital role and expertise of the Social Work profession as an important link to providing crisis and disaster services to the citizens of the metro area and the nation.“

a.       Lifetime Achievement

                                                               i.      Fr. John Adams

1.        Father John Adams founded the S.O.M.E. program (So Others May Eat).  His inspired work to help the homeless in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area is both inspiring and greatly encouraging, as it reflects how a single person with devoted, selfless dedication can improve the quality of thousands of other lives.

b.       Social Worker of the Year

2001

a.       Lifetime Achievement

                                                               i.      Elizabeth DuMez

1.     Social work career spanned 35 years and included work as a direct practitioner, social work educator, and manager of the NASW Office of Ethics and Professional Review.  She supported the re-drafting of the NASW Code of Ethics.  This was by far the most ambitious and important re-statement of the profession of social work’s values and ethical guidelines.

1.        Throughout his career, he has challenged people and institutions to be more inclusive.  Long before popularized, Jim was carrying on a private campaign of integrating lunch counters and housing, and fighting for equal employment rights.

                                                               i.      Dr. Ruby Morton Gourdine

1.        Dr. Gourdine’s professional career has been one of commitment and dedication in the demonstration of leadership skills in social work practice, and social work education.  Her professional career has been varied and includes experience in child welfare and teen pregnancy prevention and more recently social work education and leadership

1.        Helped underserved populations with addictive and mental health disorders.  Provided counseling to indigent populations; administered quality control programs; exerted leadership in grant programs for pregnant drug abusers and their children; shared her expertise to mold the nation’s national drug policy.

b.       Social Worker of the Year

                                                               i.      A.B. Chaudhry

1.        Began his career in Pakistan; for 15 years, he was a practitioner of programs to advance the coping skills of persons with mental disabilities.  His early focus was on services aimed at helping the poor and handicapped as well as flood and war victims.  Later worked for Anchor Mental Health Association and served as Deputy Executive Director for Programs.  His task involved numerous administrative, clinical and networking functions.  The people served include those facing homelessness, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS infections, organic mental disorders and geriatric issues.
